One of the places where the battle against epilepsy stigma must be fought is within our schools. Stigma from other students and teachers can have a detrimental impact on the educational experience and overall well-being of students with epilepsy. Educating students and teachers about epilepsy, mobilizing them to take action, and actively engaging them in the fight against stigma is crucial. Against this backdrop, we have launched a comprehensive program called “Seize the Schools” to empower and equip schools with the tools, resources, and knowledge needed to support students with epilepsy and create a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Through “Seize the Schools,” we aim to provide schools with educational materials that dispel myths and misconceptions about epilepsy, raise awareness about the condition, and promote understanding and empathy towards students with epilepsy. The first “Seize the Schools” visit was done in 4 secondary schools in Buea, the chief town of the South West region of Cameroon. During the visit, we conducted interactive sessions with students and teachers to educate them about epilepsy, its causes, symptoms, and proper response during a seizure. We also provided training to teachers on how to recognize and support students with epilepsy, as well as strategies to address stigma and create an inclusive classroom environment.


Furthermore, we encouraged students to become advocates and ambassadors for epilepsy awareness within their schools and communities. It was a resounding success, with students and teachers showing genuine interest and eagerness to learn about epilepsy. Over 4000 students and teachers participated in the program, and we received positive feedback from both students and teachers about the importance of addressing epilepsy stigma in schools.
